Not your hair, not your lips, not your

Not your hair, not your lips, not your
cutlass leer, not your speech full
of braze and ray, not your hands
gently folding, not your shoulders
freckled and sharp, not your breasts
which swell like smiles, not your fine
smooth stomach, not your hips which
could take Atlas’ burden, not
your legs long and dark scissor blades,
not your gentle instep, not your dark
cave, not your dark cave, not your dark
cave, but life, the life I am told is else-
where, not in sleep, love, not just in sleep.

Old Stones

I was listening to old Stones,
music before music,
as if the desert’s inanimate
objects objected to their in-
carceration and aglossia, as
if all we needed, man, tree,
dust and debris, was satisfaction.
